Local guide

Steps from the beach, on the midcoast

The inn sits directly across from Lincolnville Beach, on Maine's midcoast corridor between Rockland, Camden and Belfast. This is our honest take on the area: what is worth your time, what costs money, and what to watch out for.

Aerial view of Lincolnville Beach: sand, the bay, town rooftops and distant hills
Lincolnville Beach from above: sand, bay and town, all within walking distance.

Walk to beach restaurants, shops, and the Islesboro ferry. Everything below is a short drive on Route 1 unless noted.

See & do

Lincolnville Beach: free

Lincolnville Beach is a public saltwater beach directly across the road from the inn. Best on summer mornings before the day crowd arrives. The water stays cold even in July, and swimming is at your own risk.Allow: 1-3 hours, best in summer

Islesboro ferry: small per-person and vehicle fares

The Maine State Ferry Service runs year round from the Lincolnville terminal to Islesboro: a 20-minute crossing, about 3 miles. Ride over for quiet shoreline, then ride back for sunset. Check the current schedule and arrive early, especially for the last sailing.Allow: half a day

Mount Battie, Camden Hills State Park: small per-person day-use fee

Mount Battie, in Camden Hills State Park, is a short drive south on Route 1 to 280 Belfast Rd, Camden. Drive the auto road or hike about half a mile to the summit for panoramic Penobscot Bay views. The auto road usually runs May through October, 9 AM to sunset. Fall foliage is the peak window.Allow: 1-2 hours

Camden Harbor: seasonal sails, paid

Camden Harbor is a working harbor ten minutes south of the inn. In summer, historic windjammers run day sails from the public landing. Trips sell out on good weekends, so book ahead.Allow: half a day; season roughly June-September

Day trips & tastes

Cellardoor: tastings paid

Cellardoor is a winery on Youngtown Rd in Lincolnville, with tastings in a restored 200-year-old barn overlooking the vineyard. Confirm current hours and tasting details before you go, as the property has changed hands.Allow: 1-2 hours

Rockland: museum entry paid

Rockland is about 20 minutes south. The Farnsworth Art Museum holds one of the strongest collections of American art in New England, including Andrew Wyeth works. A solid rainy-day plan.Allow: 2-3 hours

Belfast: free to wander

Belfast is about 20 minutes north, with a historic downtown of independent shops and antiques, good for an unhurried afternoon and a walk along the harbor.Allow: 2 hours

Eat & drink

  • Beach shacks at Lincolnville Beach: lobster rolls, chowder and fried seafood within walking distance. They are seasonal, and many close for the winter. In the off season, call ahead.
  • Camden downtown: a wider choice of restaurants a short drive south. Expect waits at dinner in summer.
  • Trap to avoid: waterfront tourist menus in high season run pricier than the same meal a few blocks inland. Compare before you sit down, and do not assume a beach restaurant is open in March.

Pitfalls & getting around

  • Route 1 is two lanes through the towns. Summer weekends slow to a crawl through Camden and Rockland. Leave early for anything with a fixed time.
  • Parking: Camden's lots fill by midday in summer. Morning visits are easier everywhere.
  • Check-in is 3:00-6:00 PM. Call ahead if you will arrive earlier; the innkeepers arrange it.
  • Rent a car. There is no practical public transit between these towns. The nearest commercial airports are Bangor (BGR, about 1.5 hours) and Portland (PWM, under 2 hours); Cape Air also flies Boston to Knox County Airport in Owls Head.

Safety

  • Ocean water stays cold year round. Swim in the marked beach area and heed posted signs.
  • Fog can settle over the bay with little warning. Drive with lights on and slow down.
  • Ticks are common in Maine woods and tall grass. Check yourself after walks.
  • In winter, ice and snow make Route 1 unpredictable. Check conditions before driving, and give yourself extra time.

Getting here

  • From Boston: about 200 miles, 3.5-4 hours via I-95 and I-295 to US Route 1.
  • From Portland: about 85 miles, under 2 hours.
  • From Bangor: about 46 miles, around 1.5 hours.
  • By air: fly into Bangor (BGR) or Portland (PWM), or take Cape Air from Boston into Knox County Airport (RKD) at Owls Head, next to Rockland.
